DIY Smart Home Guy creates how-to videos for smart home automation centered around Z-Wave and Zigbee devices. Review videos are generally centered around Hubitat Elevation, SmartThings and Vera. I personally run Hubitat as my primary smart hub, however I do test products on the hubs mentioned. I understand that a home automation hub is not a path for everyone. I chose this path because I am a firm believer is advanced automation and local control.

Bought a set (?) unit of drapes for my main room. Easy, all works (with remote u have to buy). Hupta hub, wtf. Beware of extra costs. Sure I thought it would work with Alexa and my eero WiFi set up with the app. Nope. Seems I have to spend more money on whatever base is required (call me stupid). So just beware of extra costs.

Who is paying $50k for smart blinds? Did anyone really think people pay that? This is just a sponsored video…I don’t trust your opinion. You think $500 for a smart shade is reasonable? Its not

I have Caseta system. How did you get the Pico to control your shades? I’m still researching what smart shades to get. Its either smartwings or yoolax.

Nope. I have tested a few brands, and I learned that SmartWings fails. The battery on the blinds would last two months, sometimes less, before needing to be recharged. So, I purchased the solar panel charger to help with that, but there is still no battery life. And the number of times they lose connection with Apple HomeKit is too many to count. Lutron Serena is the way to go.

I like SmartWings shades as well. But I must agree that they don’t taste as good as Spicy Garlic Wings! Nice vid!

It’s not necessariily easy to reach but a momentary press of the button on the motor (the same one used for pairing and other functions) will open or close the shade manually.

Over 500 $$ for one shade? No Thanks..

  13. @chrgeorgeson on June 23, 2025 at 6:02 pm

This is a great video. I’ll be checking smartwings out.

I loved that you showed the real time install in the corner of the screen.

“I am not particularly good at providing for my family” 😅

  15. @GWilcox-p8l on June 23, 2025 at 6:05 pm

Cheap shades, cheap motors. Not quality by any means. Get what you pay for.

Soon as you said $516 I’m done!

  17. @cindianderson9443 on June 23, 2025 at 6:07 pm

  18. @Appmyhome on June 23, 2025 at 6:07 pm

  19. @williamlewis1805 on June 23, 2025 at 6:08 pm

Subbed – not because I plan to watch a ton of shade video, but because you’re awesome

Casement windows are better than vertical sliders (speaking from a 7 time homeowner which has had both) casement are way more mechanically reliable, have better R value due to positive locking against the seal, easier to clean outside glass, larger viewing glass. Do you know you can get a folding crank handle?

  21. @leoklaes1573 on June 23, 2025 at 6:16 pm

When you control multiple shades together, are they syncronized well? I have a row of windows that I’d like to see open/close exactly at the same time and rate.

  22. @kiloy1006 on June 23, 2025 at 6:18 pm

Still over $500 per window, waaaay over my budget. 😅

  23. @sheshickey on June 23, 2025 at 6:19 pm

Been looking for solution for a TALL window that gets afternoon sun, so this is timely for me. The solar charger is a game-changer as the header is 16′ from floor.

  24. @mitchelle245 on June 23, 2025 at 6:28 pm

There is a manual option for opening and closing the shade it the little button on the motor the same one you use to join the shade to a remote or a hub. Pressing the button once will set the shade to open once again will stop it and if all the way open a press at that point will send the shade down. Just in case anyone is w

We have 12 Smartwings blinds throughout the house. They’re great. Especially love the automations to partially close based on the outside temperature, and sunset. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

  26. @darleneboggs9109 on June 23, 2025 at 6:31 pm

I see you have your shades connected through Hubitat. Are you using their driver? If so, is your battery levels reporting correctly?

  27. @KarenKefauver on June 23, 2025 at 6:34 pm

Very helpful! And full disclosure is appreciated. "Blind cartels." This was fun to watch.

  31. @IronCondorSimulations on June 23, 2025 at 6:37 pm

If I do the zigbee version, can I just add it to my existing zigbee Home Assistant controller without the hub you used. I do not see any info on their site in regards to this. Thanks!

  32. @donaldhoudek2889 on June 23, 2025 at 6:38 pm

Since you installed the Solar panel on the inside of the screen, does it keep the battery fully charged or do you have to plug in a USB charger like in the winter months? GREAT VIDEO!
