Best bike gadgets for bike commuters | Urban cycling gift guide
Ho ho ho. ‘Tis the season for buying gifts for those urban cyclists and bike commuters in your life. And to help out, I have some recommendations. More accurately, you have recommendations. A few weeks ago, I asked for suggestions for bike gifts, and got dozens of ideas on the community tab of this channel, so I thought I’d make a video of those that stood out to me. Thanks to everyone who submitted ideas. https://www.youtube.com/c/Shifter_Cycling/community:

For all of those who like to fix their bike there, I would suggest wearing some working gloves on your rides, so when you do need to fix your bike, having the hands clean afterwards is really good. Thing worse than your bike breaking in the middle of your journey is having to continue your ride with your hands looking like you’re been in a coal mine :D…
thanks for the content 🙂
I have a road bike which I use to commute to work. The problem is that I bring the bike up into the office (no racks and my bike is expensive to me so I don’t like to risk it)… I found that the handlebar jack can be used like a kickstand so I can stand the bike in the office. just put it under the pedal similar to the way one would use a curb with the pedal to stand the bike…. so far, so good.
Not gift related but a question that just popped in my head. As an urban commuter, how long do tires last you?
My craft beer of choice makes 6 packs only.
For Christmas i received a 2.5 inch rechargeable flashlight with clip (Dlight / Baton 3). It sits in my pocket easily and i can use it to tinker on my bike between streetlights at night. After several years as an HVACR tech i always had the bulky AAA lights. This little critter is bright and small enough to foget which i put it in.
* next addition for my collection is a trailer for grocery shopping. I have seen several models, but wonder if any have large tires, springlings, and have strong gauge of tubeing. I would like a review like a review like your poncho review.
Shifter, are you wearing Blundstone boots? I am saving up for a pair. Hella points for wearing Chelsea boots on a bike ride.
Hey! Just found your channel and I’m enjoying looking through the content. I’ve noticed you don’t use a helmet, is there a reason why?
Crane bells are just lovely… I am an addict when comes to their E-Ne bell: I have one installed on every bike I build up and ride. One thing that is lovely about the E-Ne is that they are so small that they fit comfortably within a pogie yet are loud enough to resonate outside the walls of said winter protection—thus allowing one to make their presence known without having to take a hand out of the pogie simply to chime a bell.
Of course the two things I need – the Oopsmark GoBagg and the Merino wool clothing – are some of the pricier items. But the GoBagg is too smart looking, and the wool clothing will just pay off in more rides since I’ll be more comfortable. The waste of money has turned out to be my couch. I never sit in it anymore!
Love the intro!!! 🤣🤣🤣perfect 👌
5:02 WATCH OUT FOR THE LOOSE STRANDS GETTING IN THE CHAIN
Merino wool clothing is awesome. Expensive but you can often find it on special offer. I have some Smart Wool t-shirts and they are so much better than cotton for everything but especially active outdoor activities like cycling.
G’Damn! That is one ugly sweater
Any pure wool item will be breathable and keep you warm and also is good in the rain. Harris tweed trousers would be good but I agree the Milano is just amazing… WOOL, it’s the future…
The handlebar jack is a winner.
Actual video starts at 1:30
Good Alberta beer in the 4 pack holder
5:15 About Handlebar Jack, I use my shoes to support the handlebars when the bike is turned upside down. I usually work on the bike at home and I don’t need to wear shoes. If I’m on the field, I put the handlebars on the ground, nothing happens to the hanflebars if I do that.
Just a little factoid here: technically, fanny packs were called that precisely BECAUSE they were worn around your "fanny".. they were actually called "bum-bags" when they were officially invented in the mid 20th century. No need to feel hindered to use the name they were precisely called for!
Fanny means water in Indian…
That Air Pannier seems like a really clever idea. But a cello?? C’mon, wouldn’t it be kinda hard to ride with a cello upsetting your bike’s balance? 🤔😁
Yes it does mean something else over here.
We called those “bum-bags” which means something else over there so it all works out
It’s my understanding that what the US calls fanny packs, the UK calls bum bags
luvzit!
just found your channel when more videos coming
Christmas is over but I found the perfect gift for my husband for our anniversary! Thank you for this video!
Considering how bike UNfriendly Alberta is, you’re doing a great job with your channel. Thanks, and keep it up.
As for that mesh bag, for carrying a guitar, do away with the rainbow strapping.
Just purchased my first e bike today and I’m loving these videos!
oof the worst part of social movements is the redefinition of language all over the place… I’m a cyclist because I ride my bike a lot, just because you’re not a racecar driver doesn’t mean you’re not a driver
Your channel is a breath of fresh air. Commuting is all I do on a bike and have been doing it in Tucson for over 40 years. Your content is truly geared for the non-group and non-competitive cyclist. Subscribed.
I came here because I am an urban cyclist looking for a gift for my brother who is ALSO an urban cyclist. After watching tho I think I’m going to end up buying double of a lot of these items because now Im wanting them for myself haha 🥴
What’s youtube community?
How is the Priority Continuum Onyx bike holding up? Is it reliable?
Good video, cute moose sweater. 😍
Yea, wool really is almost the perfect fiber because it constantly wicks moisture away from your body, which is why it works in the summer to keep you cool and the winter to keep you warm. This is also why wool will help maintain your body temperature even when wet. I have literally walked for several hours in deep snow in non-waterproof shoes with thick wool socks on, and my feet stayed warm and dry the entire time. And because it dries more quickly bacteria have a much harder time thriving and multiplying in it, which is why you don’t have to wash wool clothing as often as you do with other fibers. Really, the only bad thing about wool is that it’s usually not a good idea to just throw 100% wool clothing in the washing machine unless you have a wool or "handwash" cycle, but you can still get a lot of the benefits of wool with more durability by utilizing a blend of wool and synthetic fibers with a high percentage of wool.
🙂 in the UK it’s called a "bum bag". Though there have been a number of "sling bags" that can be adapted to be worn around the waist like a "bum bag".
A late suggestion: Pierrich is pronounced Pierre-reesh. Great suggestions Tom.
Could you cover tire inflation soon.
The Universal Pannier hooks…. Any idea what the weight limit might be? I have a foam reinforced gig bag for a parlor sized acoustic guitar that I modified to have backpack straps…. I wonder if it would pannier better than it backpacks…..
Edit… Misread the shipping costs…. Derp lol
Crane makes beautiful bells. The brass has the best ring. Sustains for like 20 seconds.
Gotta get those handlebar jacks. I keep a bell, light and camera mount on my handlebars, the bike is VERY unstable if I just flip it over without taking those off. I had no idea these existed
YES DO IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR!
Lionbell works sounds better
I bought the bell. Thx.
Nice stuff again!
No one needs a handlebar jack… you’ve already got a handlebar for no weight increase.
I have a nice reflective hi vis backpack that I’m looking forward to using the pannier clips on this year!
I gift I would like would be a high lumens/lux headlight
The pannier clips look dangerous to me, have you tried riding with them? There’s a high chance some of the backpack straps are going to get cuagh in your spokes!
