back in the mid eighties i lived in a small house with a liv rom of ten by 20.
at one end i placed my new polk SDAs with Carver M1 amp ,added a couch at the proper distance from the speakers and turned it on . after five minutes the interior walls melted and i had a big listening space .

An idea for a follow up video would be placement of a sub in a small room.

  3. @Coconut-ohio on July 8, 2025 at 7:04 pm

Or you can just ask your dad to make you an setup and let him fix it all something that happened to me 🙂

  4. @ginomoujik8488 on July 8, 2025 at 7:05 pm

You might as well put your speakers on your ears. Or just use headphones.. Soooo unpractical.

  5. @BadMonkeyFinger_Audio on July 8, 2025 at 7:06 pm

Yes, I have a pair of Rega Aras that do extremely well in a nearfield setup like that in a small room. When I first got them, I didn’t really like them all that much until I pulled them away from the back wall, giving me a much more 3D presentation. It was a day and night difference.

  6. @careystuart on July 8, 2025 at 7:07 pm

The missing component; the room! You are right on! And Jazz at the pawnshop IS the finest recording on vinyl. For some reason I can’t click on that video of yours, but you are absolutely correct. The BRO 3s are very decent speakers.

  7. @warpacademy on July 8, 2025 at 7:08 pm

Hey hey. In regards to the wall of sound effect you described when placing the speakers against the front wall, another thing to take into account is the front wall acoustical loading effect that will cause a dramatic boost in the LF. That amount of extra bass will swamp the mids and highs and have a significant masking effect. For this reason you must EQ down the bass using a subtractive low-shelf. If you do that, it really cleans things up and you may very well like the sound.

Keep going, a little closer, closer, now put them on, headphones!!!!!! Wow you discovered headphones!!!!😂

  10. @michaelnyansafo7343 on July 8, 2025 at 7:12 pm

Can you recommend any Active bookshelf speakers for 2 channel music listen?

  11. @realmcerono on July 8, 2025 at 7:15 pm

My room is acustic hell – 13 x 13ft (4x4m) yes its a perfect square. I am sitting in the middle and there is obviously no low end at all because everything is canceled out. Solution is still pretty easy – dirac live combined with a sub. A Minidsp Flex can be integrated into any system. Absolutely amazing what dirac can do but still the sub is essential to fill the lack of bass and dirac is merging the sub and the speakers perfectly.

10 minute video to tell me to toss my room and nail a futon to the wall, can’t wait to tell da wife

    15 x 12 x 9 a small room??? That’s 1620 cubic feet. That’s a pretty average/good sized lounge in my corner of the globe!

  15. @60zeller on July 8, 2025 at 7:20 pm

My audio room is a 3rd bedroom. 8’x10′ speakers Falcon M10
Ended up favoring near field, I know everything in a room this small is.
But, speakers are 4′ away and pointed right at me. Sounds pretty darn good

  16. @user-jm1ec7dj9e on July 8, 2025 at 7:22 pm

Turn speed up to 1.5-2.0 times. Slow, dull talker.

  17. @corymarcotte5853 on July 8, 2025 at 7:22 pm

that my friend is no small space. Tell me how you would setup in a 10×10

  18. @Steve30x on July 8, 2025 at 7:23 pm

A 15′ x 12′ room is small? My room here is 12′ x 11′ x 8′ ceiling and I don’t think its a small room. I’ve been in a lot of living rooms smaller than this.

In fact I have a 5.1.2 Atmos system in here

  19. @simonzinc-trumpetharris852 on July 8, 2025 at 7:23 pm

    That’s not a small room.

  20. @linandy1 on July 8, 2025 at 7:23 pm

Oh yes, you need good fidelity to listen to "The Wheels on the bus go round and round"

  21. @Gamesandstuffstudio on July 8, 2025 at 7:24 pm

    Wanker !!!

  22. @petekutheis3822 on July 8, 2025 at 7:24 pm

lol 15X12 would be big to me

  23. @keithmorgan6498 on July 8, 2025 at 7:25 pm

If you are stuck with a putting small speakers on book shelf use a door wedge under each speaker and adjust the tilt of them. This can give you great depth. It also makes the speaker see the front and rear walls as non parallel. In this situation have a subtle toe-in. Thanks for the great video. 🙂

  24. @michael7018 on July 8, 2025 at 7:28 pm

You obviously don’t know anything about the physics of sound dude. What a terrible monetizing product review. That’s all this was. Pathtetic.

  25. @EricWebSurfer on July 8, 2025 at 7:29 pm

    “Lots” huh?

  26. @mikecoffee100 on July 8, 2025 at 7:29 pm

  27. @thilau5715 on July 8, 2025 at 7:29 pm

At this level (of bullshit) better use….a headset bro!😂

  28. @Gukworks on July 8, 2025 at 7:33 pm

Speakers should be hidden, subwoofers should be sealed and unnoticeable, equalizers should be taken completely out of the equation, and no speaker should be over 8". Also, cheap chinese class D amps and acoustic tiles for the win. 😅 Although, to each their own lol 😊 Good audio is in the ear of the listener.

  29. @phildavis3105 on July 8, 2025 at 7:34 pm

Due to expediency, I put a pair of La Scalas in the corners of a 10×10 room toed in. In a what the hell moment, hooked them up to a Yamaha 2 channel integrated amp. Surprised the heck out of me

  30. @CensorMeNot-dv5lg on July 8, 2025 at 7:38 pm

I’m listening to this on an A08pro:) sweet little VU meter. Work good with Fluance SX6 5.25 bookshelves. They boom in a small room.

  31. @mikehanks1399 on July 8, 2025 at 7:39 pm

You are one of the better, if not the best, audio guy on YouTube. As an audio enthusiast (not an audiophile, God forbid), I kind of stumbled into nearfield listening by necessity. Hear me out on this. The smallest room any of us have is our ears, but headphones fill that room up very nicely. One thing they can’t do is allow us to feel the music with our bodies they way speakers can. I have some quality bookshelves and even a sub (very unconventionally placed, by the way) in a rather small room, 19 feet long by 12 feet wide, and I have to use the narrow part for my listening area. I’m getting great sound, so it can be done. But I did think on the smaller side when it came to my speakers and that’s made all the difference. In effect, I have a big set of headphones. Only now, I get the visceral feel of the sound waves hitting my body as well as my ears. Keep up the good work, you are really good at what you do.

  32. @efrain5687 on July 8, 2025 at 7:40 pm

Yeah, I don’t know about that.

  33. @thenexthobby on July 8, 2025 at 7:41 pm

Wherever I’ve lived, the barrier to entry for good sound has not been room size, but rather, room usage.

But it wouldn’t make sense for us to talk about it UNLESS it’s to emphasize speaker placement need never be permanent.

    1) Accept normal listening is background while you live your life. You don’t care how it sounds when dusting the room or folding laundry.

    2) Move the speakers into position when the room is temporarily yours. Living with other humans will always make this a challenge, because even if they “like music,” today they’d really prefer to watch TV or have seating for visitors.

  34. @ziggy149 on July 8, 2025 at 7:41 pm

    10′ 4" x 12′ and maybe 9ft ceiling

  35. @alexdlrg on July 8, 2025 at 7:44 pm

Here’s a trick that can work in small rooms: Place a bookshelf speaker on a bookshelf, and place the bookshelf on the wall. Surround the speaker with books that are flush with the speaker baffle, creating a soffit mounting effect. Either do this using a speaker that was light on baffle step compensation in the first place (many small speakers are), or use EQ to fix the bass and lower midrange bump. You just gained an extra 3 feet of space in your small room. Room modes can be a problem, but careful selection of the listening position (front to back) can mitigate the issue, as well as crossing over to well placed subwoofers.

  36. @helderfonseca3856 on July 8, 2025 at 7:46 pm

you call that a small room?

  37. @telegraph_hill on July 8, 2025 at 7:48 pm

a lot of words to say "equalateral triangle’

  38. @cadiehl1 on July 8, 2025 at 7:49 pm

15×12 is not a small room. So, try again.

  39. @teddine7366 on July 8, 2025 at 7:49 pm

When asking people to use your affiliate links you need to tell them not to use coupon codes or use browser extensions like Honey. I have heard they get the commision instead of you if people use these services and don’t want to see hard working people getting taken advantage of. I am not 100 percent sure how that works but there are videos out there on Honey ripping youtubers off pretty much. Just something to look into brother.

  40. @DanielEvans-ux4ov on July 8, 2025 at 7:50 pm

    Not a small room

  41. @cars4color on July 8, 2025 at 7:51 pm

I Have done both this and lots and they work to a point. and what i mean by that is it doesn’t work for everything you listen to. One track sounds really great your speakers completely disappeared. And the next song sounds like crap. So you get up move stuff around again only to find out your wasting your time. Because its the recording not your stuff or setup. And most of these guys don’t tell you this part. I only found one guy that did and told my just what i posted here. Thats when i stopped banging my head. a lot of the music i listen to the speakers do fade out but most of the streaming music does not. Thats my two bits its in the recording.

  44. @andrewaldridge4260 on July 8, 2025 at 7:55 pm

Why do you assume small room means small budget?

  45. @johngore5127 on July 8, 2025 at 7:55 pm

Wow. Dude, buy yourself good headphones. For most of us problem solved. This looks ridiculous.

  46. @randomtube8226 on July 8, 2025 at 7:56 pm

So far nothing is working for me in my small furniture filled odd shape room. I just can’t achieve soundstage.

  47. @yvonloiseau52 on July 8, 2025 at 7:56 pm

Ain’t it funny? You talk about images, pictures but you forget to talk about the music , you must be an expert lol. If you want nice holographic pictures, get yourself a camera and look at them all you want. One day you might discover the true purpose of sound systems, they are not image systems. Just try to LISTEN TO THE MUSIC for once and you may learn something.

  48. @orborbea9844 on July 8, 2025 at 7:57 pm

Oh yes ! Perfect timing ! I just got done with isolation in the attic. It’s not big at all so this video is heaven sent 🎉

  49. @Steve30x on July 8, 2025 at 7:58 pm

I have my sofa 3 foot away from my back wall with no acoustic treatment.

I was using a pair of Sony floor standing speakers for 19 years and I thought they sounded fantastic.

But I replaced them with a pair of Polk audio ES20 a few days ago and the polk sound a whole lot better.

I never heard a phantom center with the Sony speakers. But I was listening to something three days ago and I literally had to check if I had my Denon X2800H set to all channel stereo.

But it was only sending sound to the front left and right speakers. It was amazing. I never heard a phantom center before.
