Are hard-wired security cameras worth it? — ONWOTE 4K security camera system review
Hard-wired security cameras have several advantages over wireless security camera systems. But ease of installation is not one of them. Today we show you how to install an ONWOTE 4K PoE NVR hard-wired security camera system yourself and help you decide if it is worth the extra effort involved.

DIY Smart Home Guy creates how-to videos for smart home automation centered around Z-Wave and Zigbee devices. Review videos are generally centered around Hubitat Elevation, SmartThings and Vera. I personally run Hubitat as my primary smart hub, however I do test products on the hubs mentioned. I understand that a home automation hub is not a path for everyone. I chose this path because I am a firm believer is advanced automation and local control.

He says,"as long as you’re not running a criminal enterprise." You know people get targeted for things as simple as political differences right? My family has been getting harassed endless because we love America and im a veteran. People now relate having an American flag to being a domestic terrorist/racist. Sad, but true.
its a great video and would greater if you had just lost the light egg crate reflection in the what looks like a microwave
Does Onwote cloud service also ping your mobile device like a ring system?
I love how you simultaneously insult yourself and the viewer with those text cards
No they’re not worth it, they’re disabled with nothing more than a flashlight
Hard Wired = Jammer Proof
*This nerds a dry version of my neighbor Dick*
4k? quality looks like a potato show in the 80s. This is why I don’t trust sponsors videos.
6:40 that was pretty funny. I lolled
I hope it isn’t windy where you live, that house would blow over in a mild gale
You can use a combination of wired or PoE cameras, and wireless cameras with your own in-house NVR, without a subscription.
Is 4k right, but why such a poor footage?
Thanks for the overview.
Are there any recorder systems that allow one to remote connect to the system from a PC in another room through the local area network (Ethernet or WIFI)? That would be convenient because you could access it from any PC without dedicating a monitor (and perhaps a mouse?) to it, and actually remote connect through the internet to your home without needing a service from the company.
Does this NVR works with other cameras? I have an existing cameras installed already and just want to change my nvr.
Thanks for the pros and cons of this unit. But as for the ceiling joists. It would be helpful to put some maybe like a third of a 4X 8 plywood sheet, maybe One nail or screwed in place and the others you could maneuver around the edges. Plywood’s much lighter than of God forbidden pressboards thanks again and have happy holiday/ Christmas season.
there is no Guardviewr app for my mac. onwote install manual says downloadGuard station. Once again no such app exist in mac store. went to onwote website and downloaded VMS pro to my mac and now im stuck becuase the manual is for guard station. wtf im getting annoyed.
Hardwired in today’s world is the only way to go because criminals have jammers that completely interfere with wireless cameras. I will be changing to a hard wired camera system.
Another commercial… thumbsdown
So, when is opening night at the comedy club? 😂
So I ended up buying this system in a black Friday deal. Two cameras were defective right out of the box. Looks like ONWOTE is going to replace them, but it doesn’t give me a lot of confidence.
Many NVR kits come with just 4 cameras but many can support 8 directly hardwired cameras and even more network attached cameras (wired Ethernet or wireless WiFi).
I’m watching you from Ontario, Canada I like the way you do your video review, looks like an awesome system you go there, greetings I think I’m a subscriber now.
I guess the question is if you want to view it remotely outside of your LAN, you would need cloud access. Does that mean that certain TCP ports would have to be exposed in order to view it remotely (e.g. TCP ports 80/443)? There could be some serious security implications once cloud access is enabled.
6:37 😂 rekt.

These type of entry level kits are ok. Generally these type of kits lite series 4K cameras with a small image sensor 1/3 or 1/2.7 Better to put a kit together using 4K cameras with minimum 1/1.8 image 1/1.2 for larger areas. Aperture of 1.2 or larger.
Yes, way better than wireless for so many reasons.
I planned ahead when building my house, I ran power to an upper corner inside of the linen closet which is centrally located in my house. I did this because I was going to wire all the TV’s to be able to access the VCR (yes it was that long ago) but the price of VCR’s dropped drastically before I got around to doing it. This is the perfect location for the NVR. The closet in my home office is located on the back side of the linen closet making it easy to route an HDMI cable through the closet and to a TV hanging on the wall above my desk.
P.S. I also ran power to the broom closet specifically to recharge a dust buster, with cordless vacuums becoming popular this should be a standard in new home construction, I haven’t see a recent NEC code book so for all I know it could be required now.
id rather have a wireless system. Hard wired doesn’t have half the features these new Ring cameras have
"…or if you run a criminal enterprise" 🤣😂🤣😂
Batteries are a pain in the arse, especially if your wireless cameras are installed at some height requiring a ladder. You can buy solar panels to power some cameras (Blink).
Ok, that was a really good video! 😁 We were also contacted by ONWOTE to review their camera system and I wanted to get more information on the installation process before we accepted their proposal. Your video was very helpful and VERY fun to watch too! I had children gathering around behind me to watch and they were literally laughing out loud. Thanks a bunch!
Why no insulation in your attic?
Thanks for the Video, I was looking for a good security System and I found it with your onsite review, specially the at the minute 5:57 when you caught the bad guy, lol. Good Video
What I see with the thieves at our place is they often move quickly, this sets up motion blur and they can’t be identified. It’s really important to have a system that doesn’t have the blurring issues and it usually means buying a top shelf product.
I got an unplanned 4k poe camera while the system was running and plugged back in that camera. I never worked until I put a new camera. I don’t know what went wrong. Let me know if you have a clue. Thanks
The negative regarding smart home integration is HUGE and is a drawback that wireless cameras don’t usually have. With an Alexa routine, my wireless eufy cameras can make every Alexa in my house play alert sounds and turn on every smart light switch in the house.
This is not an intrinsic drawback. They could make wired/PoE cameras with smart home capabilities, and ReoLink cameras have an Alexa skill (but not Alexa routine support). I would love to find or see PoE cameras with smart home integration.
Also, the makers of smart home integrated cameras could very well make PoE variants, but they just don’t
How about a standalone wifi camera to receiver (baby monitor type) then from receiver to bnc that plugs into early type dvr in my case swann brand . Any thoughts people?.
3:28 Your next DIY project could be installing 4′ x 8′ Radiant Barrier or regular OSB in your attic as a deck so you don’t accidently fall into the lava.
I have a similar system from Lorex. NVR is in basement. Monitor and mouse in kitchen connected through a KVM transmitter through an extra cat 5e cable that I pulled 20 years ago.
Would you recommend using this for indoor use as well?
" If you run some sort of criminal enterprise " …hahaha, brilliant… 😆
hi can i have 2 different output like hdmi and vga ? meaning lets say vga will show 1 camera and hdmi the rest
you need a separate monitor for the NVR??? thats insane, i’m sure you can access the feeds just on your PC if its in the same network?
If at all possible, do NOT use wireless cameras. The high-end houses in my normally extremely safe neighborhood are being broken into by illegal aliens that use a jammer to disable the wireless systems. This is happening across America so it’s not limited to just my area. If you are unable or unwilling to hard-wire your cameras then consider hiring a low-voltage cable installer.
I was fortunate to have considered an NVR system before building my new home.
I have 8 wires run, despite only actually having 5 cameras at the moment.
Well worth the $.
Sounds good but almost $400 isn’t in my budget. Great video, very informative.
Great job Pete! Thanks.
Lmao… loved the basketball skit!
The nice thing is that once the cables are in place you can upgrade the cameras as needed
