I’d definitely get my younger kids an Apple Watch before an iPhone or iPad. Definitely watch first, iPad second, iPhone when they are teens learning to drive and starting to have some more independence and preparing for that next stage in life and should have a little higher responsibility than an 8 year old.
Oh yeah, it’s perfect until you actually have to set it up for a kid. Apple is not a software company and it’s proven with this set up. It is the worst piece of garbage software I have ever seen. If you’re not careful you will screen time yourself out of your own goddamn phone.

Use Case: Child with Type 1 Diabetes wearing Apple Watch for Dexcom CGM continuous glucose monitoring and alerts. Problem: Unrestricted access to Apple Watch means child tends to play with emojis and non-medical related apps when they should be engaging with school activities. School Mode shuts down access to all apps is thus useless to selectively enable diabetes tracking on Apple Watch. No solution here?
The ONLY feature it’s missing is the one way call. I have a children’s watch that gives you the ability to call the watch one way and hear what is going on around the child- but it’s so flimsy 😢
