Wondering why using a hub is considered bad, or something you want to avoid??? I just bought a Zigbee and Z-Wave combo USB hub for less than $40 dollars, and it’s just the size of a normal USB drive.

  2. @joeriggi4159 on January 8, 2025 at 6:43 pm

So speaking of no hub, question. I use Alexa and Govee light strips and have had a hell of a time trying to find motion sensors that work with both of those without a hub. Do I have a hubless motion sensor option for Alexa+Govee or should I cave and buy a hub?

  3. @toddbierbaum8479 on January 8, 2025 at 6:45 pm

Please do an episode on current HomeKit/Matter RGB recessed lights!

  4. @denzzzlo on January 8, 2025 at 6:46 pm

I am sure that a huge number of automations in the house can be implemented without smart devices at all. A humidifier in the bathroom, night lighting, lighting of shelves in cabinets, emergency light in case of a power outage – all this is I could implemented using dumb devices. Costs less, works better and requires minimal setup, there are now so many DIY components for a penny with which you can do interesting projects without smart home devices

  5. @shanenn.8603 on January 8, 2025 at 6:50 pm

Thank you for the information on some of the new sensors. I have used Google Home for years with no hubs. The workaround for Google previously was to buy a smart plug from the same company that your contact sensors comes from use the plugs trigger to trigger your routine through google home.

  6. @leanneflask2664 on January 8, 2025 at 6:50 pm

You mentioned that you are able to trigger packages with your nest doorbell, how? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

  7. @TheSkepticSkwerl on January 8, 2025 at 6:51 pm

You don’t need a hub, just google branded products. I am moving away from google, so the hub was 1, worth it, and 2, cheaper.

  8. @xmhtax on January 8, 2025 at 6:52 pm

This look like buying waste after waste

  9. @chaegardner3410 on January 8, 2025 at 6:53 pm

    What Doorbell are you using?

  10. @marker220 on January 8, 2025 at 6:54 pm

I try to stay away from Wi-fi like the plague. Too many wifi devices causes congestion on the 2.4/5 GHz band. Get a HUB!

  11. @PRS-0317 on January 8, 2025 at 6:54 pm

I want to see how much you can do without any cloud connection.

  12. @kevinsono on January 8, 2025 at 6:54 pm

question about Meross garage door controller you use to control your garage. It says that in order to use this device on a certain garages it needs an extra accessory what accessory if it has the yellow or purple learning button? Do you know what kind its talking about?

  13. @tatts4life838 on January 8, 2025 at 6:55 pm

I’m not sure where I saw this but I thought it was in a video of yours but I can’t find it. I saw in a video where someone had a humidity sensor that would turn on their exhaust fan if they forgot to. What I want to know is what is that sensor and can it be set up the opposite way. I want a humidity sensor that will shut off my exhaust fan once levels go back to normal. We don’t have trouble remembering to turn on the fan. Our issue is knowing how long it should be on after the shower

  14. @hardchoice19 on January 8, 2025 at 6:57 pm

    1. So my black-looking American born kids with Jamaican and Panamanian heritage arent black? 2. What do black Americans have to do to make them participants of black culture if Obama and Kamala don’t make the cut?
    3. Is this culture issue informing how you vote? You say no, but spend time suggesting otherwise.

    Thanks for the content.

  15. @ivo4357 on January 8, 2025 at 6:58 pm

this is merely a list of stuff. I can do a video of what color underwear I use every day, and it would be as useless as this one. Granted, much more tasteless.

  16. @shauneredfield2086 on January 8, 2025 at 6:58 pm

Anyone know which switch is being used for the kitchen pendants in the video ? About the 12:30 mark

  17. @appleimacdude on January 8, 2025 at 6:59 pm

I have a couple of LED night lights by my kitchen sink, plugged into a 3 in 1 outlet strip – I have looked for something simple that would sense the nightfall, turn these on, then off again in the am – the sensor would need to be somewhere not close to these lights, as in a windowsill. I have Apple computers, and an iphone.

  18. @TAPSSebas on January 8, 2025 at 7:00 pm

how to to the thing with the tv

  19. @ccdoz5419 on January 8, 2025 at 7:03 pm

???? Would you do a video on smart homes for seniors/disabled? Or do you have recommendations on where to find suggestions? Trying to help my parents age in place by setting up a system for them but easy (like physical buttons on somethings) for them to operate. Voice technology doesn’t always work well for them. Thanks!!!!

  20. @LikelyLagging on January 8, 2025 at 7:03 pm

Would you say the treatlife one works better than linknlink’s presence sensor?

  21. @bimalgupt on January 8, 2025 at 7:06 pm

Im all into the amazon ecosystem so whats a good substitue to the google script editor for me? cuz even though the devices can pair with google, my speakers wont be able to aill they?

  22. @mrtube1012 on January 8, 2025 at 7:07 pm

    hello reed
what hubs do u suggest , I use Tuya for all smart appliances, and magic home for all led lights
    thanks.

  23. @Chris-zu4es on January 8, 2025 at 7:07 pm

I’m interested in knowing how the aqara presence sensor works. I want to know everything it can do. like does it work through a window…

  24. @timsbird1971 on January 8, 2025 at 7:08 pm

So where does the code that does the automations run? It’s running somewhere. The scripts must be somewhere. That is a hub.

  25. @NatesRandomVideo on January 8, 2025 at 7:09 pm

The Athom mmWave sensors are cheap and can run native ESPHome.

  26. @fasthowto on January 8, 2025 at 7:11 pm

Due to your large format tiles, you should define your kitchen floor as hardwood in the roborock app and then set the floor direction to match the tiles. Less streaking!

  27. @samuel_geist on January 8, 2025 at 7:13 pm

What lights are you using in your garage? They look nice and bright and low profile.

  28. @djLovelyTime on January 8, 2025 at 7:14 pm

Why get strips in the bathroom that you don’t need when you could just get RGB downlights to only turn on dim red during the night, which won’t wake you up…

  29. @Brickleyandmore on January 8, 2025 at 7:18 pm

I have a cool automation idea with the kasa smart light switch so what you do is on the kasa app you set the light switch so when is double tapped it turns on a kasa smart plug and then you can go on the Alexa app and say when the device is powered on to turn on multiple other lights

  30. @qaszim2012 on January 8, 2025 at 7:18 pm

You talk a lot but say nothing meaningful. "Look I have this". But given no instructions on creating this routine or how you set it up and any issues you ran into

  31. @SmartHomeSolver on January 8, 2025 at 7:19 pm

Are you team hub or no hub? 🤨 Hopefully this video sparks some automation ideas, no matter what you use in your smart home!

  32. @ryanc3001 on January 8, 2025 at 7:20 pm

It’s there a way to use a motion sensor and non Google doorbell to auto live stream on the hub

  33. @Gamen4Bros on January 8, 2025 at 7:21 pm

    I love this video!! Thanks

  34. @alexdelatorreyestrada7748 on January 8, 2025 at 7:21 pm

Does the google script editor have if then capabilities? I’d love to see a video going a little more in depth about it!

  35. @zaeem9601 on January 8, 2025 at 7:21 pm

Thank you for pointing out everything that Google Home can do. As someone new to automations and being a little broke, i just connect everything to Google Home. That way, my non-techy spouse can also use everything. It’s simple, it’s easy, and it works (the automation part, not the speaking to Home devices part).

This is an easy way to simplify life so THANK YOU for sharing what can be done with Google Home.

I hope you can make a video of yourself physically showing us the automations and how to set them up because, at this time, the only thing i know how to do is ‘If it’s 11 p.m., dim these lights’ or ‘If it’s 7 a.m., turn these lights off’. I wouldn’t know how to set up some of the more complicated stuff but i want to learn!

  36. @jcarman on January 8, 2025 at 7:25 pm

There’s a lot of mention of "google" in this. Is there a legit way to get away from google with respect to the smart home products? I ‘m really becoming ever so more uncomfortable with them. Apple is only marginally better.

  37. @TheLegendZA on January 8, 2025 at 7:26 pm

How did you do the TV automation?

  38. @docugraf on January 8, 2025 at 7:29 pm

and now: Do your automations with a broken internet connection

  39. @joshk333 on January 8, 2025 at 7:30 pm

Can the script editor be used to skip the voice response? For instance when I say “goodnight” I don’t want it to blare its 10 second response to what all it just did.

  40. @create_expert on January 8, 2025 at 7:30 pm

Does anyone know if you can get Siri to announce stuff like Alexa.

  41. @ryanc3001 on January 8, 2025 at 7:31 pm

still cant automate non nest doorbell live stream (on nest hub) when (non-nest) doorbell is pressed…. maybe is you added a separate motion sensor?

  42. @SAShivram on January 8, 2025 at 7:31 pm

wait until google keeps killing their next(nest) product and support. just use homeassistant and be done with

  43. @SilentDecode on January 8, 2025 at 7:32 pm

I’m kind of allergic to "Cloud connected devices". So while these automations are awesome, I have no idea how to do this in a local-only Home Assistant (yes, all my smart stuff sits in a seperate VLAN where only HA has some internet access). Could you make a video about such automations, but skip everything that relies on anything cloud?

I have a Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 hub using ZHA and a Conbee2 flashed to Matter. I don’t have anything for Matter yet though.

  44. @revx on January 8, 2025 at 7:32 pm

Got a tip for your switch issue at 12:40 – instead of trying to find a pair of smart switches and bulbs that work together, you can simply wire the bulbs so they’re always on and then use automations with the switches to control the bulbs. Just run power in to the switch, but not out. Works like a charm for me, and works with any ecosystem!

  45. @johnmichalek9802 on January 8, 2025 at 7:32 pm

    You lost me at google.

  46. @blak238 on January 8, 2025 at 7:34 pm

Needing a home automation to tell you to stop showering is a bit of a stretch dont you think. If its for a child i get it but as an adult i would think i know when to stop showering

  47. @JoshsSmartHome on January 8, 2025 at 7:34 pm

Nice video Reed, but you know hubs are the way to go!

  48. @volcolby on January 8, 2025 at 7:37 pm

So, for someone that has so many things automated in their home, Reed, what are the things you are thinking about how to add automation to?
(And, I’m really team "no hub" but most of my stuff uses a hub.)

  49. @davidbeiler6364 on January 8, 2025 at 7:38 pm

Sounds like a panasonic ad…., the package notification seems kind of pointless if you have the amazon app
