Worth it? 3 Tech Pouches at 3 Different Prices

Worth it? 3 Tech Pouches at 3 Different Prices

Strangely, I’ve never owned a dedicated tech case despite people (including many of you) recommending I try them out so in this video, I try to answer the question of whether or not they’re worth it – and share 3 tech pouches at 3 different prices.

Would love for you to try the tech pouch from Peak Design, Maurice! Great points from each of the price points are definitely in PD’s version πŸ™‚

  2. @TeacherSeanM on December 31, 2024 at 6:18 pm

Ulanzi! They make great tech bags at a good price.

  3. @uncles2000 on December 31, 2024 at 6:19 pm

I use the TomToc, because of its size, organizational capabilities, stand up feature and price. The main reason I use a tech pouch, is I find that I don’t forget tech items, at home. I have a set of what I need, that never leaves the pouch. When I pack, I am confident that everything I use, has a travel sized, second version, in the pouch. As a single bag and single sling traveler, a tech pouch is no more a single point of failure than the bag it’s stored in. If I loose or the main travel bag, I loose my clothing, toiletries and any tech, that is in the organization bag(s), stored within the main travel bag. The same is true with the sling. The main single point of failure items, I carry, are my passport, cash, credit and phone. Because of this, I have developed a ritual to avoid forgetting them, and have a security plan, for theft, depending on my location. After these critical, single points of failure, everything I carry, is easily replaceable, although at a cost, to get me home. There is a point, at which, planning and redundancy, become diametrically opposed to minimalist carry. It took me many years of carrying extra weight, solely for the fear, of events that never occurred. This ultimately led me, to realize, that I had unrealistic, redundancy fear. I started routinely replacing, things that wore out, before they wore out. I carry only one of anything that can be easily replaced anywhere. I only carry items that I will actually use on that adventure. The amount of gear, I carried, was cut by 1/3 to 1/2, and my total carry weight, was dramatically reduced. I went through the same exercise with clothing. YMMV.

Tomtoc PRIME deal 45 CAN $

  5. @abbynguy1016 on December 31, 2024 at 6:19 pm

Great video as always!! Do you think the tomtoc can accommodate a Nintendo switch?

  6. @GameOpsDevStyle on December 31, 2024 at 6:19 pm

Does anyone make a multi-tool that won’t get confiscated by TSA?

  7. @npc1511 on December 31, 2024 at 6:21 pm

One thing I would recommend against putting in a tech pouch are things like multitools or torches. While it’s nice to have everything together, it’s not uncommon to forget all of the gear you have in your pouch, especially if it lives at the bottom of your bag. If you’re travelling on airlines, it’s a great way to have have your multitool/screwdrivers confiscated. Personally, I prefer keeping these in a separate "I can’t fly with this in my carry-on" pouch which lives in a very visible spot in my bag.

For torches, you’re also better off not putting these in tech pouches – if you need a torch (i.e. it’s dark outside and so hard to see) then you really don’t want to be digging into multiple pouches to get it – if your main bag has a fixed lanyard in one of the easy access pockets then I find this is the best place to keep your torch.

Other than that, I would recommend going to large/factory direct luggage stores. There are a lot of really good no-name (or at least lest well known name) tech pouches out there which do an excellent job as well and can come with a lower price tag than even the tomtoc shown here (though that’s not a dig at the three shown). The benefit of a tech pouch is that it will typically be protected by your bag so unless you throw your gear around then the materials of construction are not as critical, which can help to keep the price down. I have been using my zoomlite tech pouch for 3+ years now with no issues and it was the equivalent of about $20-25 USD.

  8. @StTimmy on December 31, 2024 at 6:28 pm

I’ve been looking for a great one stop shop channel for all my EDC needs. Thanks Maurice!

  9. @dust7001 on December 31, 2024 at 6:28 pm

My issue with Tech Pouches is they often are at odds with the sizing of my Everyday bags. When they are fully loaded they basically only fit in my full sized travel backpack.
I have 2 but they are both loaded with essentially "troubleshooting" kits of 2 different varieties. They are basically "tech contractor go bags" I throw them in my Motorcycles bag on my way out if I need them.

  10. @ogtessaract on December 31, 2024 at 6:28 pm

I got the Alpaca Elements tech case when it finally went on sale in my price range because I loved your vid about using it as a sling. It’s a little too small for me for an easy grab-go every day sling (I’m a tech nerd and a mom – need a little more random "cruft" space) but watching this vid… πŸ˜‚ I know what my tech pouch is now. πŸ‘(seems very similar to the Alpaca Vertex.) Any reason why you wouldn’t use the Alpaca Elements as a tech pouch? Especially as you seem to not be using it as an edc sling anymore? Thanks for the review. Love your vids.

  11. @Akella1986 on December 31, 2024 at 6:30 pm

Want to buy some of them

  12. @haroldmarenger3435 on December 31, 2024 at 6:30 pm

Hello. I have been enjoying your videos. You have interesting and very useful content that encourages me to consider my EDC and travel purchases, and how well my gear integrates with every thing I do. When looking at the TomToc and ALPACA tech bags, slings, etc., are they slash proof/resistant, and have RFID shielding to slow down theft and data skimming? Thanks again for the great content!

  13. @breensprout on December 31, 2024 at 6:30 pm

that tomtoc tech pouch would make a sick toiletry or makeup bag.

  14. @StarDarkAshes on December 31, 2024 at 6:30 pm

Who makes the SD card caddy? I couldn’t find it in your list and it was one of the things I really was excited about when I saw because that looks perfect for what I need right now thanks great

as a watch guy, every time i watch your videos, i notice your watches too. maybe it’s time for a "Maurice Wears" channel?

  16. @phrog5578 on December 31, 2024 at 6:32 pm

hi, may i ask what are the strap you using on your watch? is it leather or rubber

Anyone know where to find those iPhone cable ties @2:12 ?
    Thanks πŸ™

  20. @MysteryFinery on December 31, 2024 at 6:37 pm

@Maurice Moves are you aware that Geowizard has found your fathers location RIP.

  21. @bryanfunk4151 on December 31, 2024 at 6:38 pm

I like how your break down the tech carry. The size and amount of the tech matters which will drive e a person to an accordion, flat, or open layout. The amount of protection is also important. I in am fond of AER tech pouches in both sizes. I don’t like the accordion style as it’s too limiting. They are beautiful looking as well.

  22. @UlyssesLegaspi on December 31, 2024 at 6:39 pm

Hi @MauriceMoves, just wanted to ask. Those red cable keeper/manager that I saw on your videos, where did you bought those? Or you made them yourself? Are they paracord or shockcord?

  23. @Martin-pb7ts on December 31, 2024 at 6:39 pm

I have the Alpaka Elements tech case. Olive with the blood orange interior. I absolutely love it. I found a voucher and got 15% off making it a really good buy in my opinion.
I have to say I think you compared the Tomtoc and Belroy to the wrong Alpaka. In size and capacity the Alpaka Elements Tech Case is a much better comparison and about half the price of the Vertex. I kind of feel like you are comparing apples and oranges here.
I was definitely considering the Belroy, they make great products but the book style opening means anything loose will probably slide out onto the table when you open it. Kind of like a grocery bags splitting as you try to catch everything. πŸ™‚
    Thanks for the video.
(I should add I use the pouch as a sling to carry my phone, wallet, glasses, etc. and it is great for that.)

  24. @itsmattaitken on December 31, 2024 at 6:41 pm

Great video as usual Maurice. I backed the vertex pouch on kickstarter and you identified a key issue. Which is it’s bulky which means you need a backpack if you’re going to transport it with other tech like a laptop.

  25. @ytjim on December 31, 2024 at 6:42 pm

Geowizard brought me here, but a fellow Torontonian reviewing Bellroy, among other things? What a find! That gets a sub from me.

  26. @danielpeti3885 on December 31, 2024 at 6:44 pm

I have the tomtoc pouch for over a year now. Great bag highly recommended.

  27. @e_man9821 on December 31, 2024 at 6:45 pm

OMG!!! The TomToc is what I use. I have 4 for laptop, photography & smartphone accessories.

  28. @robertgrenader858 on December 31, 2024 at 6:48 pm

I thnk it’s terminally cool that you wear an analog watch and carry a pen. Just saying.

  29. @flipninja55 on December 31, 2024 at 6:50 pm

First comment, the small wiha go tool kit has just inspired me and I am buying one ASAP.
The Belroy may be something I look at when my current cheap amazon solution fails. I’d love to see what you actually carry in the Belroy (or other tech pouch) for your personal travels. To me, the Belroy seems a bit large for the bag that I use (BRAVO SLING MAX), but you seem to make it work. The cheap Amazon kit ($13 Bagsmart) that I’m using has been more than sufficient for my needs and is much slimmer for compatibility with my sling. It clearly won’t hold as much as the Belroy, but I don’t need that mcuh either.

  30. @CurtainCraftsman on December 31, 2024 at 6:51 pm

Love your content. Though I couldn’t make the Traveler’s Notebook work for me I picked up something else that has helped me organize better.

  31. @TheMariokart69 on December 31, 2024 at 6:54 pm

I see a lot of these videos but this is honestly one of the better ones at showing what you can practically fit in there. i ended up going with the peak design which is similar to the Tomtoc. Great vid!

  32. @pippers8349 on December 31, 2024 at 6:55 pm

I would love to see your thoughts on the lihit bag in bag at some point!

  33. @Ducklicker on December 31, 2024 at 6:55 pm

Ur little touches on the editing are godly

  34. @scoutyd1885 on December 31, 2024 at 6:58 pm

    Great video (as usual).
I bought the Peak Design tech pouch and toiletry pouch. They share similar construction. Issues that I personally have with both of them is too many specific compartments that ‘bulk-out’ the pouch when filled quickly. Basically I can get the same amount in a pouch that is almost half of the volume when there are less specific compartments. The most compact pouch I found is the Rick Steves small Go Go Gadget Tech Pouch. It is not so robust, has only a few mesh pockets, but suits my needs. I also own the same pouch in the larger size & can fit my tripod/selfie-stick in that as well. My husband inherited the PD Tech Pouch and enjoys it.

  35. @justonbrazda3846 on December 31, 2024 at 6:58 pm

Can’t have a tech pouch comparison without including the peak design tech pouch

  36. @johnnadalin6273 on December 31, 2024 at 7:00 pm

I like the look of your backpack at the start of the video….can you please let me know brand and style etc.? Thanks for the great video

  37. @lw1405 on December 31, 2024 at 7:01 pm

I love your videos Maurice! I’ve been going back and forth between the Bellroy and the tomtoc for a while now. Where did you get those red cable ties?

  38. @nadarfa9413 on December 31, 2024 at 7:02 pm

    You look like your father.

  39. @blktauna on December 31, 2024 at 7:03 pm

I carry at least one solar power battery bank as well as power converter, usb hub a billion cords and my notebooks, ink and pens. I love the tomtoc but everything only comes in black and that’s just a no.

  40. @pf4773 on December 31, 2024 at 7:03 pm

I bought three types of tech pouches, and abandoned all of them for one simple reasonβ€”they take up too much space in my luggage. It turns out that simple plastic zip bags will compress much better and save a ton of space. I put these bags into my roller bag or my computer bag. If you don’t have to worry about space (i.e. you check your bags) I think the tech pouches offer more organization. But, again, once I’m at my hotel, air bandb, cruise liner cabin, etc. the tech gadgets come out and are on the table anyway.

  41. @kauaiboy5o on December 31, 2024 at 7:04 pm

Pouches are too bulky and takes space and weight. I use ziplock bags or use the pockets in my suitcase or bag.

  42. @Dr.Schlitz on December 31, 2024 at 7:05 pm

What is the point of the shoulder sling bag? It looks dorky and seems far less useful than a small backpack? I don’t get it.

  43. @ewliang on December 31, 2024 at 7:10 pm

What watch are you wearing? Looks like a Seiko Alpinist.

  44. @HomyakOfDoom on December 31, 2024 at 7:10 pm

I don’t even think of buying any of these things, but watching this is just so satisfying. I can’t explain it, but the whole EDC thing together with your high video quality makes this just a perfect thing to just watch and dream. It also inspired me to search for cheaper options, which are not always worse

  45. @jemelitatunhawan3471 on December 31, 2024 at 7:11 pm

Boss umuwi kb ng pinas? Parang ikaw ung nakita ko

  46. @zephyrbrightmoon6962 on December 31, 2024 at 7:11 pm

I’m so proud to know you’re one of us! (Torontonian) Fantastic delivery style that feels real and natural, unscripted even if there’s a script somewhere, and you give us essential information without verbal fluff or padding to pad out the video length. Your thought process on what is useful and attractive tech and tech accessories is also very high quality, so that owning anything you recommend turns out to be a great choice. You’re just a top notch guy.

  47. @tom_hoots on December 31, 2024 at 7:12 pm

I would like to offer another idea, for your consideration: FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, do you REALLY need "a pocket or strap or whatever for EACH AND EVERY thing you carry around with you?" GOOD GRIEF! All of the "organization" in these things just WASTES SPACE, as if you just absolutely COULD NOT "dig" for a few seconds into just one, big pouch. There are "Stand-up Zipper Bags" from Klein Tools, and likely other companies, that will hold some amount of stuff, without a dozen different pockets and straps and so on. For instance, I have a rather large Anker power bank, along with a high-power charger, several USB cables, a short extension cord, and so on — just "in a bag" like these. I use a couple of those bags for my overall "organization," and I can fit whatever I want into bags like that. In the end, I have DRAWERS full of old, unused "organizers" like those mentioned here — but what I USE are a couple of these Klein Tools bags.

  48. @waynetruitt2305 on December 31, 2024 at 7:12 pm

Hi Maurice.. Superb video.. At 2:12 in, you show iphone / charging cables w/ unique red/black "ties".. can you provide insite on where to find these? Thanks in advance!

  49. @Duubly on December 31, 2024 at 7:13 pm

When I travel, my tech pouch is my sling bag until I need it to be a sling!
