Sleep trackers can offer some really helpful insights into your overall sleep health and sleep quality. But the sheer AMOUNT of data in the trackers and apps can be incredibly overwhelming. Heart rate, sleep stages, HRV, awakenings, sleep onset… what does it all mean?

Sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus cuts through the noise and tells you the THREE data points you should be paying the most attention to. He also offers his thoughts on the overall accuracy of sleep trackers, and the one thing you need to be using alongside any good tracker.

If you want to analyze your sleep, get a prescription for a Polysomnogram! I have an app on my iPhone called "ALARMY," and I have the premium version, and I’m on a ventilator with a tracheotomy, and the ventilator I use takes over my breathing. Well I wanted to have a good laugh by using the sleep analyzer on this app, as I KNEW it would be HORIBLY INACCURATE!!! I also had an audiobook playing last night too. LOL! I went to bed at2:30 A:M and woke up at 9:05 A:M and guess what. It said my sleep was HORRIBLE, when in fact I sleep great last night!! I GOT A GOOD LAUGH!!! I’m going to leave the audiobook OFF tonight, and see what the sleep tracker does. I’m going to make fun of these apps that claim to analyze your sleep! THEY DON’T!! They listen for noise, and snoring! THAT IS WHAT THEY DO! So, the ventilator and the audiobook will effect them. I’m going to be on the ventilator, but no audiobook tonight, and see what happens! I can’t wait to make fun of the app again tomorrow!

Thank you Dr! Are you able to discuss in the future which sleep trackers you recommend? Iโ€™ve been using the Fitbit for ten years and LOVE the sleep cycles but have been considering the Apple Watch but have heard that the sleep cycles arenโ€™t included?

Doctor, what do you think about the Sleep Cycle tracker which measures through sound (in the current version)? Thank you for the great tips!

I’ve had 3 sleep studies. I don’t believe they are accurate because, just try to sleep with all that equipment on you. The first time it didn’t even work because I never fell sleep at all that night. The second night they gave me Ambien an tested from there. I forget why a third time.

Thank you. Very thorough and helped me decide not to get one until tech gets better.

Why my rem sleep shows zero always

  10. @draugami on December 31, 2024 at 6:44 pm

I have a problem with the accuracy of the full sleep study. Who can sleep normally with 27 electrodes attached to you? Good accurate data requires no influence from the test measurement. Think Heisenberg .

Are they helpful or do they turn you into a neurotic person who is constantly thinking about sleep. This past summer I went through a terrible time with a family members illness and I couldn’t sleep. I became obsessed about sleep and sleep hygiene but my sleep didn’t improve. Once I stopped obsessing about sleep I started to sleep better and although I still am not sleeping great I feel that stopping worrying about my sleep constantly really does help.

Guys are u idiots the sleep tracker can track u down what if u never wake up

  18. @Yowzoe on December 31, 2024 at 6:55 pm

Magnesium (in *Glycinate* form) can be very, very helpful for sleep issues, inc. RLS and muscle cramps

Eat with food unless chelated. Best at bedtime.

Take two hours apart from calcium (or other individual mineral supplement) for maximum absorption.
Also split the daily dose — same reason.

You need adequate D3 levels for optimal absorption.

Exercising and pistachios are also good for sleep, the most important thing for sleeping is to relax the nerves.

I’m not sure what to think of my Amazon tracker. I sleep for 5-6 hours, wake up to pee get back in bed to try to get some more sleep and can’t fall asleep laying there. I know I didn’t fall back asleep but it tells me that I slept for another hour or two. I’m exhausted all the time, it sux.

The Quantified Scientist YouTube channel does a lot of comparisons of various wearables against EEG, sleep studies etc. I ended up getting a beat to death iphone 12, an apple watch series 9 for around $500 usd in my country. It’s way more accurate compared to my galaxy watch 4 and performed quite well up againat an EEG. With the apple watch, along with my cpap data, a wellue o2 ring, and the iphone strapped to my chest, I’ve got breathing, oxygen, pulse rate, sleep stage, and positional data to use to help me manage my therapy.

Could you possibly rate the sleep trackers for us? I have the Fitbit Versa 4.

    Thank you

  24. @johnmaggio7976 on December 31, 2024 at 7:11 pm

Is it.possible that you can give us insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the different sleep trackers? Is rhe fitbit algorithm good, better, best, etc… What about the ring, what about apple watch?

  25. @JIMKATSANIDIS on December 31, 2024 at 7:12 pm

I read that a wearable fitness tracker is just a great way to monitor your daily steps but, it can also be a smart way to learn about your sleep. Wearable sleep-tracking technology has become a popular and convenient way to audit and understand sleep habits and even resolve unique sleep-related issues. Thanks for the informative video Dr. Michael!โค๐Ÿ‘
