► AFFORDABLE Home Theater System for SMALL SPACES – ProCinema 6D Review
The ProCinema 6D was my first home theater system after leaving home for college 20 years ago. I found myself in a tiny garage apartment forcing me to give up my beloved JBL G400 system. Buying my first home theater system meant going small. Finding a home theater system for small space wasn’t as easy as it is today. Soundbars weren’t a thing yet. The Definitive Technology ProCinema 6D home theater system kept me watching movies & enjoying music in a small space.

Should you buy small speakers for home theater or a sound bar? This Def Tech home theater is more flexible long term but buying a sound bar for a small living space home theater is what many buy. But if tight on space & plan to upgrade later, this a great first time home theater.

How would you compare these speakers to the Yamaha YHT -5960U setup?
My first system was nothing as fancy as what you just reviewed! I was 12-13yrs old and had a tiny room at home. I bought a Panasonic 5.1 system for about $250. I spent weeks moving speakers and playing with settings and in the end it wasn’t that good but it made me happy and its what got me going in this hobby. Now I’m almost 40 and in the process of building a system for a brand new house. Thanks for the little trip down memory lane!
My first proper home theater system was back in the late 90s. A Denon A/V receiver and Paradigm speakers/sub. Was a gift from my brother and I loved it for nearly 20 yrs. Downsized a.d couldn’t fit it in my current space. Repalced it with an LG soundbar that sounded pretty good… it died after 4 yrs. Now unhappily sporting a Polk Audio soundbar that I am actively intending to replace.
Question about the radiators. Do they make that much of a difference? I have an opportunity to get a great deal on the older style Pro 80s but they dont have the radiator. For rears I wonder if it even matters?
Love the channel and your style. Any thoughts on the Klipsch Reference Cinema 5.1.4 system? I’d love to see a video on that.
How would you describe the difference between this setup and the Vizio M-Series 5.1.2 for a small/medium room home theatre?
Would the 4 satellite speakers work well for front and rear height channels?
Andrew, I get where you are coming from. I still oen a Procinema 600 system, I recently listened to the 6D at my local Best Buy and found that there wasn’t any real reason for me to upgrade to the 6D. Not to say it wasn’t good, but it isn’t much different from my Procinema 600 system. I think they are quite similar, and in saying that,I should point out ths critical point. I own a Pioneer Elite SC-07 AVR which is a lot better than most receivers you would normally use with this level of speaker. Having a really good AVR/Amplifier makes all the difference.Soundstaging is pretty good for this level of speaker. My system is used for both music and home theater, in a 13×13′ room..The "lean and cool" repoduction is more a result of the AVR you are usin with them, The lack of ariculation from the sub has everything to do with how the source is recorded , where the subwoofer is placed and how the system is crossed over.100hz is what My AVR chooses when I usetthe MCACC-auto room calibration, but when listening critically I choose 150hz, it works betterr, I usually turn the sub down slightly to avoid any :chestiness with dialog during movies.and that works just fine.My first "on my own" system was a Pioneer Dolby Pro-Logic AVR and Optimus speakers with Linaeum tweeters. I also had a Kenwood seervo sub. I chose this system because i had heard each of its components separately and liked them, they were also prety affordable. I’ve upgraded a few times. My best speakers I’ve owned for Hometheater were PARADIGM – At the time I owned a YAMAHA RXV1000 AVR , YAMAHA DVD CAROUSEL, PARADIGM TITAN v2 monitors, matching CC-170 Center channel, PDR-10 10 inch 110 watt subwoofer, and ADP-70 Dipolar surrounds for the rears. (I still have these and they still work quite well. When the Paradigms became a little "long in the tooth" I bough my Procinema system refurbished offf of EBay..I was once an audio salesperson and liked them enough to consider them as replacement for my previous Paradigm system, and through several AVRs nd rooms I’ve had them now for about 10 years and still like them.
My first theater speaker system was an Energy Take Classic 5.1 system with a Yamaha rx-v675 receiver. That Energy speaker system was good enough that I bought another set a few years later. Nice aluminum dome tweeters with 4 inch mids and surprisingly potent 8 inch powered, ported sub.
Thanks for the video. You replied my question: seems like these are not the best choice for music.
In the description, you have written ProCinema 600, I think it should be ProCinema 6D
“Affordable” it’s twice the price as the klipsch reference theater pack which has bigger speakers. Oh, bigger speakers don’t mean better? Why all the hate on sound bars then? Because these speakers turned on their side and put together look like a sound bar
Hi Andrew, can you tell me what speaker wires go with the pro cinema 400?
Andrew, Great review. I had to go back and watch this one. My first, on my own, system was a mix match system from spending 8 hours at Audio King listening and haggling. 32" display model Sony CRT, Harmon Kardon AVR 85 5.1, JBL "huge" center channel, ADS Large book shelf fronts, MB Quart Medium bookshelves for surrounds. I still have the Center channel and the MB Quarts. I watched this review because I am trying to match something with my Pioneer Elite VSX 501 AVR. I have a whole bunch of speakers (and two Monoprice 5.1 systems in a box) but I am wondering how much better modern speakers could sound. I do like listening to music through my system so I am thinking of reusing some of my existing speakers but don’t know how they would match up. Or should I ditch them and invest in a matched 5.1 set… hmmmmmm. What do you think? I have all hardwood floors, 9′ ceilings, 15′ wide by way too long as my kitchen wall at the other end of the house is my back wall about 40′ away. The living room area is prewired for speakers but they are mounted at the corners of the
"square" room and about 5’5" up the wall. (speaker mount positions make the room almost 15’x15′). I have the Monoprice 5.1 system on the wall right now but I don’t think they will do my receiver justice.
great review, very passionate and informative on the subject
What were the reasons you chose the Sony over the Denon? I just picked up the Denon and came across this video.
Hey man my room is 16 square meters donyou think those small speakers can blow my room like cinema or i have to go to big speakers for more cinema style im waiting your answer thank you!
Hi Andrew, I always enjoy your reviews and after-video banter with your wife. You 2 are awesome. I just finished watching the video. I think you were referencing the original Procinema 600 since the 6D isn’t that old..Both suffer from a somewhat lean midrange when not properly set up and not powered well. Granted my system is a little different, being that I own a Pioneer Elite SC-07 with 140wpc on tap. The sub has always been the system’s Achilles though. One thing which should help though is to wire the receiver to the sub’s high-level inputs(the binding posts) and then wire the speakers to the sub. Once you’ve done that, set your front speakers as LARGE. next rerun your receiver’s room correction. This makes the midbass warmer, the crossover point between the sub and sats is only about 6dB per octave so it is not as steep of a slope, hence it allows for a much smoother transition and than your receiver’s sub-output filter.- still, keep that wired by the way so you can adjust the LFE to your liking for movies.
Articulate, informative and enjoyable reviews, thank you.
Hey Andrew, I’ve got a Klipsch 5.1.2 atmos setup and my only disappointment is that the dialogue coming from the center seems a bit localized and I’d love to broaden it out. I tried the "center spread" setting on my Denon AVR but it didn’t seem to make a difference, and most people seem to discourage using it anyway. I’ve been curious if the midrange drivers on the Definitive center would help project more of the dialogue as opposed to the Klipsch just sending it out of the horn tweeter, or will the tweeter still be doing all of the work of the Definitive as well? Thanks to anyone who can help me out with this!
Replace this with procinema 800 or 1000 problem solved
What would you pick for a 9×10 room the Def tech or the Klipsch Reference theater pack both 5.1 for movies? The Klipsch comes with a ONKYO .
What hz should I set the satellites and center to? And will audessy set up do that?
I just inherited this setup in mint condition, considering setting it up in my main room with a Sony 1080 receiver. (Smaller room with 8 foot ceilings)
Panasonic SA-PT650 dvd 5 disc changer 5.1 😂
i dont have this system but i do have the subwoffer and let me tell you in a small area this thing is a beast. my main theater room is all klipsch with the 15" subs but his def tech sub is awesome in a 15×12 room
Hello Andrew ! Very interesting video. I like it, wide comments that are very useful. My first home theater speakers were JBL 6.1 home theater with a Yamaha receiver. I’m totally agree with you about how much delicate is the proper tuning of subwoofers.
I have a few ideas I think might enhance your video and help provide more information to viewers . . . 1. You didn’t include any video of the 6 (or 7) passive radiators in this system. 2. No video of any speaker terminals or subwoofer amplifier controls 3. No mention of rear speaker setup or the wall mount options that the speaker design gives you. 4. Does the subwoofer grill come off – no shots of that driver? Is it sealed or ported, or does it have the passive radiator as well, like other DefTech subs?
Perhaps you left these out for reasons. I just feel like it would be valuable content and thank you for considering including this kind of information in your videos. If not, that’s fine. They’re your videos.
What part of this system would you replace first if able? Center, sub, or L and R?
Came across this video after hooking up my 6d with a Yamaha v385 receiver. I have not finished the sound set up and while it def sounds better then just tv speakers or any sounder I have had Im not sure if Im liking it or not. I see I can get the Jamo s803 set for 200 on amazon plus a sub which seems like a good deal. Or should I bite the bullet and get tall speakers like I used to have. I’m a bit lost in this world now compared to years ago. I wanted to keep everything up high which meant above the tv excuse of kids but at this point ill just do what needs to be done for good sound. Im about $1000 in on my receiver and the speakers as I got them open box at best by but were brand new still wrapped.
Any suggestions would be appreciated thank you
$1000 is not adorable.

How do you feel about the polk audio TL1600 5.1 speaker system?
New subscriber. So which av receiver did you prefer with this system? Was it the sony?
Please please please do a video on centre channel speakers, just brought Polk’s RTI a9,need a good centre to match,I have b&W and dynaudio centres but I don’t get that feeling it matches well, please please any advice.cheers from Australia…
First for me was a Energy RC Micro 5.1 with a Denon avr1513. Was in a smaller appartment so space was a premium in the living room area. Still have the set up almost 10 years later as my bedroom HT set up. Have a def tech set up in my current living room set up. Really wish Energy was still around.
The ProCinema 80 system with two ProSub 80s is still better than most new small HT systems… even after all these years.
I have 2 pairs of the Def-Tech ProMonitor 1000’s paired with the ProMonitor 2000 center channel, Klipsch SPL-120 subwoofer, and a Denon x2700 receiver. I’m not nearly a audiophiles as you are, but I love it. But I’m thinking of upgrading in a couple of years to something bigger after I buy a house. The question is, Wyatt do I upgrade to?
Would love some reviews on in-ceiling or in-wall options (I recognize the logistical issues this would pose for you). Especially fronts/centers that buck the reputation of in-walls. Often times in wall surround can be a good compromise between stands and a soundbar but not too educated on what realistic options are.
The procinema were technically my first surround setup speakers. Before this, I bought a pair of procinema 600’s to have atleast stereo with my receiver (bought the 600 set right after). This was about 7 years ago and they are still my speakers and have been using them with a Yamaha rxa1050 for about 6 years or so. They sound fantastic for my setup and I have always used them in relatively smaller areas (bedrooms and now in my basement).
I run the fronts thru the sub and I am considering buying another pair of speakers (maybe an upgraded sub too) to make an 5.1.4 setup in my basement at some point but thinking about what pair to get.
Mind giving the link to the beautiful media console /stand ? Looks very nice !
Great video love your thoughtful analysis on home theatre gear. I was eying the Pro Cinema 800 on clearance ($359) to replace my current Onkyo HT750 (old HTiaB) setup I picked up a decade ago but I’m assuming the Jamo 803 system would be the way to go after watching this. Also my first setup was back in 1996 with a 5.1 pioneer receiver and off brand KEH surround speakers that were so cheap they had paper cones on the center channel. They did the trick for a teenager getting into home theater!
Wanted to leave I comment on your High-end audio break in, that you asked your viewers to do and your comments are turned off?
Hello, what do You think obout Logitech Z906 system?
Home Theater In A Box 👎
Great videos btw, really like em. is anyone actually finding this system for less than $1,000? cause all i can find online is right about a grand even though the msrp says $899? i guess i should say, i’m not too interested in used or refurbished gear at this time. at least for this.
Thanks for the reviews. I found your site recently as I’ve been getting ready to upgrade from an old Sony HTIB and I just ordered these from Costco last week for $549. I’m planning on pairing them with a Denon AVR S760H which I’m going to get from Costco as well. Hopefully they sound good together.
optoma hd 66, denon avr 591, precision acoustics surround speakers
My first system was a few hundred dollar sony avr with satellite speakers I put on stands. Small little things. Your review reminded me of back then and I thank you. Now my main struggle is the Denon x1600h or the Sony 1080. I am pushing klipsch R-620F’s now, planning to add center, ceiling, and subwoofer. No space for rears.
LOL my first surround sound system was all in one box. I don’t recall the model but I know it was a Yamaha receiver with 2 front, 2 rear, 1 center speaker and a sub. I remember best buy through it in free for purchasing one of their selected DLP big screen tvs. Wow!!! did I just date myself lol. I thought I was so cool. Bought my first house with a big screen and booming system. That was funny.
