Your Remote Desktop SUCKS. Windows Remote Desktop? Locked behind Windows Pro. Windows to Mac? Nope. My editors just switched to Mac, and now they need to remote in from home—but there’s no way to do it. Linux? xRDP? VNC? Too clunky, too complicated.

I want one remote desktop to rule them all—free, open-source, and working seamlessly on Mac, Linux, AND Windows. And guess what? I found it. In this video, I’ll show you the BEST remote-desktop solution you’ve never heard of. Plus, I’ll walk you through setting it up step-by-step so you can finally have a remote desktop that just WORKS.

For home and office use I have been using mRemoteNG, but this does not always work even though vnc is an option to log in. I will 100% be trying RustDesk. Thank you.

  24. @EinfaII on May 19, 2025 at 3:39 pm

Microsoft is pretty dog shit but you can skip the $200 price tag with the mass gravel activation scripts. This doesn’t mean you should use windows as again it’s just dogshit in general but if you need rdp and don’t want to shell out the cash then use the activation scripts

  30. @tizhproger on May 19, 2025 at 3:46 pm

It is an interesting approach, but It depends on a use case and (for my opinion) has a few things to consider:

    1) If you need to help your relatives once or a few times, you can just use Anydesk, because instead of explaining where to press and what text to enter (to connect their machine to your server), which can be hard depending on tech knowledge of people, you can limit actions to 3-4 clicks and saying ID to pair.

    2) Despite the fact that 5$ is not expensive, technically it is not free and you still paying it even if you not using it. I know it is cheap, and you can configure auto shutdown etc., but still. Yes, you can configure it from local network but it less convenient and secure as a cloud.

    3) For people who don’t trust rustdesk servers (and others else) it is important to remember that our server is still in someone hands, which are owning a host. So local hosting is an option for them instead of cloud.

    4) You can also try using Parsec, due to its gaming orientation. It requires an account and a good connection but I think in terms of performance it can be even better.

Thank you for video. I am very interested to see the comparison between an existing solutions for remote desktop with rust desktop, just to measure if it is really great in performance and worth to use instead of all of them.

  31. @thomasipad7719 on May 19, 2025 at 3:49 pm

    Parsec?

Ok so I’m very new to Remote Desktop, so let me see if I’m understanding this right.

So there are "native" solutions like Microsoft Remote Desktop (built in on Pro but also an app you can download on Mac to remote into a Windows Pro device?), and that will work better than anything else in this list, regardless of whether or not its on the same network (does it have to be on the same network?)

Then there are apps like Chrome Remote Desktop and those two you mentioned, which work anywhere with higher latency and inferior integration to the native solution?

Then there are apps you can download on host and accessing devices like RustDesk, which is worse than Microsoft’s native but better than web-based ones?

For apps like RustDesk, you can connect directly if you’re on the same network, but if you aren’t you have to create your own server/use one of their own public ones? Or if you use Twingate somehow it becomes a "direct" connection even though you aren’t on the same network? Is Twingate a VPN or something? Not sure what "Zero Trust" means.

And if you want to not use a public server, you don’t have to host your own on the host PC, but there are free solutions out there (is Docker free?) that let you create a cloud based server that don’t impact you at all, that you don’t have to maintain, that allow you to directly connect to the host without being on the same network? Does this require Twingate as well? Or is this an alternative? Are there performance differences?

    Edit: A couple questions:

    1. So these solutions (or at least some of them) don’t require the host device to be logged in, just powered on?
    2. Are the solutions listed in the video better than the ones I’m seeing in the comments like Sunshine, Moonlight, and Tailscale for general usage/heavy CPU computations (not gaming, more CFD and CAD)
    3. Does the native Remote Desktop have all the same functionality as the apps above.

Question about security: My current setup is VNC over SSH tunnel with PKA. ALL other network activity is firewalled. Does Rustdesk support a similar setup? (Both server and client machines are Ubuntu, but different versions).

I used to use TeamViewer for years to connect to my home servers or my children’s PC at their home with their mum or theirs when they’re here at mine. But I got sick of the repetitive triggers for commercial use suspected. So I ditched it & discovered Anydesk & I think it’s brilliant. I can direct connect without internet to network connected machines, power on & everything else. But the positive is the file transfer speeds & the ease of using. I discovered however, they limit how many favourites you can have to 5 on the free license. But I asked them if they did anything to allow for more favourites & explained why. And without asking, they allowed me up to 30 favourites. So they won me over on this!
